This essential sourcebook for students of contemporary design explores the wealth of fashion print produced during that tumultuous decade, with exclusive illustrations and original artwork by some of the era’s greatest pioneers, including Biba, Warhol, Marimekko, Zandra Rhodes, and Celia Birtwell. Hundreds of images and illuminating captions convey the impact of these artists and the great movements of the period, beginning with Pop Art and continuing on to Flower Power and the Magical Mystery Tour. 50s fashion for girls - Custom Lettering

Custom Lettering of the 40s & 50s

Custom Lettering of the 40s & 50s

Before the invention of Letraset, the sheets of dry-transfer letters that became popular with designers in the 1960s, custom headline lettering styles were frequently drawn by hand, creating a limitless field of innovative, creative, fanciful letters full of stylistic freedom and an energy unfettered by typographic traditions and templates. The covers of dime-store comic books, serials and pulp novels, in particular, practically sang out with these designs, which are collected--an astonishing 4,500 lively examples in all--in Custom Lettering of the 40s & 50s, compiled by the award-winning graphic designer, illustrator, comic artist, logo designer and typographer Rian Hughes. Here you'll find "The Planet of Stone-Age Men" spelled out in heavy block letters riddled with cracks as if the letters were stone themselves; the headline of a war serial rendered in outlined letters that appear vibrant, as ready to take off into the air as the propellor plane depicted beneath them; elegant looped copperplate script that waltzes across the page sedately; bold Art Deco capital letters that overlap each other like tango dancers' legs; the tipsy, effervescent letters of the word "Cocktail"; and many more. Certain to become an indispensable sourcebook for graphic designers, typographers, art directors, anybody who works in advertising and indeed everybody who cares not only about the words they read but how those words look, Custom Lettering of the 40s & 50s is an encyclopedic treasury.

JANE AND STAN ADLER, COUSINS IN FLORIDA

JANE AND STAN ADLER, COUSINS IN FLORIDA

This photo of Jane and Stan was most likely taken in the early 50s and enclosed in a card sent to my aunt Dorothy, Jane's first cousin. Jane grew up in Omaha. For years, they lived in the Coral Gables area of Florida. See tags for more information. The drapery must have cost a small fortune. Now, of course, such drapery would have to be updated--it's the "in" thing now, updating.

The other main role for wool scarf is as neck warmer which scarf is strongly needed for cool season. Paisley is a droplet-shaped vegetal motif, similar to half of the T''ai Chi symbol, the Indian bodhi tree leaf, or the mango tree. The design originated in India and spread to Scotland when British soldiers brought home cashmere shawls. From roughly 1800 to 1850, using Jacquard looms, the women of the town of Paisley, Scotland adapted the design and wove woolen shawls, hence the design is popularly known as the Paisley pattern. Changes in fashion led to the demise of the shawl bringing hardship to the weavers in Scotland and the originators in Kashmir.

The Truth About Diamonds: A Novel

The Truth About Diamonds: A Novel

In her electrifying first novel, Nicole Richie tells the sensational story of Chloe Parker, a rock royalty princess and a card-carrying member of Hollywood's inner circle. At the age of seven, Chloe was adopted by a music superstar and his wife, transforming her life from rags to riches. What followed was a wild childhood distinguished by parties with movie stars and rock idols, run-ins with the press and the police, and a subsequent stint in rehab.
Suddenly Chloe shoots to instant fame as a spokesmodel for a national ad campaign. When her long-lost birth father appears out of nowhere and her best friend betrays her, she must struggle to keep it all together -- her sobriety, her friendships, and her integrity despite the betrayals of those around her. Ultimately, Chloe comes spectacularly into her own, achieving stardom in her own right and finding true love.
Through the eyes of the captivating Chloe and the talented voice of Nicole Richie, we are given a no-holds-barred look at Hollywood's new elite, behind the velvet ropes, inside star-studded premieres and parties. Whether they're doing the "circuit" (begin with shopping at Barneys New York, Marni, and Fred Segal, then end with the grilled vegetable salad at the Ivy), or ending up on the front page of your favorite weekly magazine, Chloe Parker and her fellow A-listers never fail to dazzle, their larger-than-life dramas more riveting than any reality show.

Priceless: A Novel

Tall, blond, and willowy, this twenty-two-year-old seems to have everything going for her—she’s rich and gorgeous, a talented singer, and has just returned to her Park Avenue penthouse after a year studying in Paris. But since her mother’s tragic death years ago, her father, an extremely successful financier, has been her only family—and if she’s being honest, her only true friend.
All that changes when Jacob Williams is arrested on charges of fraud, and the SEC freezes the family’s bank accounts. With her father in jail and her partying pals suddenly scarce, Charlotte escapes Manhattan and heads to the one place she doesn’t think anyone will come looking: New Orleans.
Determined to rebuild her life, Charlotte moves in with her beloved former nanny and finds a job in a local restaurant. Between trying to make ends meet and hiding from her past, she meets Kat, a fellow fashionista who introduces her to the best of the Big Easy’s bohemian style. With Kat by her side, Charlotte begins to haunt nightclubs, securing singing gigs that soon begin to heat up—as does her friendship with a local boy, Jackson.
But Charlotte’s being followed by an angry stalker who wants nothing more than to destroy her for her father’s crimes. And with Mardi Gras just around the corner, the masquerade has only just begun . . .
From the stylish avenues of Manhattan and dark clubs of the French Quarter to the bright lights of Los Angeles, the multitalented Nicole Richie’s scintillating tale shows that the very life you run from is the one that won’t let you hide.
